How to register to vote in Michigan

How you register to vote depends on when you register to vote.

If it's more than 14 days before Election Day, you have a few different ways you can register to vote:

IN PERSON (On or before October 19th)

You can register to vote in person at any of these places:

• Any Secretary of State branch office.

• Your city, township, or county clerk’s office.

• Any state agency that provides public assistance or services to people with disabilities.

• Any Armed Forces recruitment office.

• A voter-registration drive.

ONLINE

You can register to vote online at mi.gov/vote. Click on “Register to vote online.”

To register online, you must have a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID.

BY MAIL​ OR EMAIL

You can print an application, complete it, and mail or email it* to your city or township clerk. Get an application online at mi.gov/vote. Click on “Voter forms and publications.”  

* You must email a picture of the form and a photo ID to your local Clerk if choosing to register by email.

Starting 14 days before Election Day (even up to 8 p.m. on Election Day), you can still register and vote in upcoming election.

IN PERSON (On or after October 20th)

Visit your city or township clerk’s office, complete a registration application, and provide proof of residency. ​​

Proof of residency is a document with both your name and the address where you currently live. For in-state students, this can be your campus address or your home address. You may use any of the following documents as proof of residency, but the document you use must have the address you are registering at:​

• Valid Michigan driver’s license, MI state ID, or U.S. Passport 

• Valid Tribal ID card 

• A utility bill

• Insurance documents (health, car, home, etc.)

• A bank or credit card statement

• Financial aid or school enrollment documents

• A lease agreement

• A paycheck or other government check

• Other government document with your address

Registering to vote in Michigan at your campus address will change your registered address (shown on driver's license/state ID). This will not impact your financial aid or university residency status. You will be sent a sticker from the Michigan Secretary Of State with your new registered address which will need to be applied to the back of your driver's license or state ID.

If you register to vote fewer than 15 days before Election Day, ask for a registration receipt. Keep this receipt and bring it with you when you go to vote.​​​

to make sure you're prepared on Election Day.

How to find your clerk

Michigan law allows same-day voter registration and voting in person during the early voting period as well as up until 8 p.m. on Election Day. For in-state students, you can locate your clerk by clicking the "Find My Clerk" button.
